Did you know? The Derwent Dam was the location for 617 Squadron’s practice runs before heading deep into Germany in 1943 with the aim of destroying the Edersee, Mohne and Sorpe Dams. Famously known as the Dam Buster raid, the pilots and bomber crews needed somewhere to practice using the innovative ‘bouncing bombs’ created by Sir Barnes Wallis. The Derwent Dam proved to be the perfect location, and so local history was made!
